Being Grateful and focusing positively

Being Grateful and focusing positively

I live in a country where the main theme is complaining. People complain constantly about everything. At my last job I had to listen to customers complains all day and to top it off I had to listen to my colleagues complaining about work also. At the end of the day it’s mentally exhausting to have to listen to that, day in and day out.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it when people confide in me. It makes me feel like they trust me and my opinions and advice. Do not let someone use you to unload their emotional baggage all the time.  Its draining and you’ll notice chronic complainers makes you feel down just by being in their company.

Sure, humans have the right to express how they feel about things that’s unfair…about things that hurt them. As people we can’t hold things inside or else that leads to emotional explosions.

You know that quiet friend or family member that seems to be cool headed about everything. Have you ever wondered why they don’t complain about things? Are they holding everything inside and you need to watch out and wait for the volcano to erupt. What if they are just wired to see the bright side of life.

Our brain works in a funny way. The more you focus on something, the more your brain will seek out those things. So if you focus negatively on something, you need to either find some way to be okay with it or you will end up in a negative spiral. That’s when your brain decides to focus on everything negative in this world and in your life. That’s how most people become depressed.

It’s not easy to focus positively when there are so many things that bother us, but it’s not impossible. It all starts with being grateful. Be grateful for what you have in your life.

The best way to do this is keep a Gratitude journal.  You can also download an app on your smartphone like I did and at the end of the day write down at least three things that happened that day that you are grateful for. I also set an alarm on my phone so that I don't forget.

At the end of the week or whenever you are having a really bad day read your lists. You will see this life is not so bad after all. The more you start focusing on the positive things in your life, the more your brain will start seeking out those things.

So what are you grateful for today?

It can be something as simple as the fact that you woke up this morning and you were spared another day so that you can make a difference in your life, in this world or in someone else's life.

I know this life can be hard and unfair, but it can also be beautiful and full of joy. Start focusing on the positive things that brings you joy. We just need to find that balance between the negative and positive. In this life there are no promises that everything will be okay all the time, but how we react to those things can either break us or makes us stronger. Until next time…Goodbye :-)
